This brings me back, In 97 this was playing at a local art house cinema and me being 12 and IN LOVE with everything that was anime related urged my dad to take me to see this. Needless to say those 90 or so minutes were life changing for the both of us
Not sure if it's a real weapon or not, but IMFDB doesn't appear to show anything similar to the SMG the major is holding here. It looks kind of unique with the grip and trigger so close to the muzzle, in front of the magazine. Anyone have any idea what it is?
Closest thing I can seem to find is a bullpup version of a "Stribog SPA9", but it doesn't look quite right either.

It's very likely a completely fictional firearm that only coincidentally looks like that Stribog (the Stribog came out in the late 2010s, and this art is from 1995 at the very latest). I suspect it's an early design of the CZN-M22 from the film before they finalized the look.
The body has good color rendering, but the line art and background donโt match the same level of quality. It looks heavily traced because of that inconsistency. Also, if you check their other artworks, they all have decent anatomy.
You canโt suddenly perfect anatomy with that level of line art.
And the artist also has a lot of AI art in their Pixiv bookmarks, which says a lot.
I noticed after posting that all the other art from this artist was deleted for possible ai assistance, my bad. I do not know how to get my own post deleted.

@joedude There is no way to delete your own posts. You can just leave it as it and it will be automatically deleted in three days if no one approves it.
Note that AI-assisted works, while borderline, are allowed, so there is still a chance for this post to be approved.
Going through the artist's twitter account, I don't find any evidence of ai. Fishnet is double layered on the chest, artist has previously drawn characters with fewer fingers, image quality looks like compression for adoptable biding. Twitter account has been posting as far back as 2023 with no obvious signs of ai usage. I'd say they are a legitimate artist and just messed up that pinky at most.
