Regarding the Shin_Megami_Tensei tag

Posted under General

There was only about a page long of misuse, but I'm bringing this up before it becomes a bigger mess: The overal franchise is known as "Megami Tensei". Just that. -SHIN- Megami Tensei is just ONE of the multiple sub-franchises, like Persona and Devil Summoner, the name being stuck in front of Persona and Digital Devil Saga games in the localizations is just a marketing decision from Atlus USA.

That means: Whoever it was, stop using this tag with Devil Survivor images, as I've seen it been done often recently.

If they put the name "Shin Megami Tensei" in the front of all the games, people will come here searching for "Shin Megami Tensei" to find images about the series. Am I mistaken in believing that tagging isn't about what an item actually is, but what it is perceived as?

As well, the user base of Danbooru is largely English speaking, and as such the Megami Tensei games we receive will all have the prefix "Shin Megami Tensei".

I'm not arguing if "Shin Megami Tensei" only refers to the Japanese series of Shin Megami Tensei games. I am arguing that, for all intents and purposes of an English speaking audience, Shin Megami Tensei is and refers to the entire series.

And if you notice, for English localized releases, the -only- games to have "Megami Tensei" contained in the title are those released with "Shin Megami Tensei" in the title. Even games titled "Shin Megami Tensei" for their Japanese releases had the "SMT" portion dropped. For an English speaking fan, Shin Megami Tensei IS Megami Tensei.

The thing is, on danbooru things are tagged with the japanese names for everything, rather than the English. English titles don't really mean squat.

or to put it another way, what the lowest common denominator searches for doesn't really matter as much as tag accuracy.

That is not true.

Example:
Darkstalkers and Vampire.
While synonymous, Darkstalkers DOES return results (albeit results for Vampire).

The problem with this example is obvious (While every SMT is a MT, not every MT is a SMT), but concessions are made for English titles. Oh, and no one f*ing uses the "Megami_Tensei" tag for anything. :|

The only reason this is an issue is because English speaking fans consuming English released games with "Shin Megami Tensei" on the front are uploading images which are not classified as a Shin Megami Tensei game in Japan.

PS: No one smart enough to visit the forums here is going to tag a non-smt game with the smt tag. I'm arguing Devil's Advocate here for the sake of a reasonable solution. You can look at a couple of the Devil Survivor images and tell that I knew the difference between SMT and MT prior, and was questioning the nature of Devil Survivor at the time.

Most english titles are aliased to the japanese title, jesus why am I arguing with someone with 2 posts and an account less than a month old I must have some kind of brain damage or something.

Really?

I wasn't aware that the age of my account or number of posts were relevant to this conversation. Do they somehow factor into how many pixies will spawn in the next area?

Don't get all butthurt over a discussion on the internet.
Really, this isn't anything personal.
