A container worn on the body to hold a firearm (emphasis added), typically a revolver or semiautomatic pistol. Holsters may often be found belted around the thigh or on the hip, or suspended under the armpits from a shoulder harness (see shoulder holster).

In short, "thigh_holster" says a holster may contain various things, especially knives, while "holster" says it is only for firearms and especially not knives.
I think we should leave holster as gun-specific, but we need to decide what to call the former knife holsters. We also may want to draw a distinction between two different types of objects:
1. Wide single strap; often of brown leather; usually contains multiple knives/objects; associated with ninjas, assassins, and certain maids
