Let's not overthink this. In the context of Danbooru, someone searching for gay is almost certainly searching for gay male art, for which yaoi is the closest match.

I'm not sure how else you expect it to work. The only purpose of an alias like gay (male) or gay (female) is to show up in autocomplete, because nobody's going to search for that naturally. This by necessity means knocking something else out of autocomplete. If most people typing "ga" or "gay" are looking for other tags and not for yuri, then it's not worth the alias.
