Howto's and help's

Posted under General

From previous discussions it's become clear to me that we don't have a good help for danbooru. Even though most of the technicalities are explained in the help somewhere, it's hard to find, and much more importantly, it doesn't tell you how to behave on danbooru--it just says "here's how you do this or that". Our community is based on a lot of rules that we created as we went along, and I think it's somewhat unfair to new users in that sense, they come here and have no idea, and nowhere to go to find out.

Of course, the issue with this is: it's a good idea, but who's gonna write it? Therefore I decided to take a proactive role and start writing some very basic "howto"-style pages that hopefully will give users some insight in this.

Here's the first page I wrote:
howto:comment

Please discuss this idea and execution, and feel free to edit my page and make new ones. I will be quite busy with work and moving but I'm still hoping to write a few more over the next few days. (Of course that depends on whether this turns out to be a good idea or not!)

Once more howto articles are written, I'd like to see some form of integration with the danbooru interface, prompting new users with these howto pages as they explore the site (for example, they would get a popup similar to the current "You got mail" at the top, the first time they visit the comment page. This will hopefully encourage them to behave in what we consider to be an appropriate way, and at least nobody can claim (like they can currently) that there's nowhere that you can read these things.

Keep in mind that the upload page does list some guidelines that are hidden once you become privileged (to hide the clutter). But I'm glad to improve on it.

Yeah, I think I remember those... It was a long time ago. I think they're fine as is, although I guess it couldn't hurt to polish them more, but anyway that's sort of what I was going for but more comprehensive?

I think I'll go work on it now.

I swore we had one but simply cannot find it right now. If Albert still has it, it'd be best to build off it rather than rewriting it. Though that depends how old it is of course.

I approve of both of the howto pages. In my opinion, Kayako's page on how to rate seems easier to read and comprehend, compared to the link Hillside Moose provided.

One thing I would like to point out is under the howto:comment, the third rule (スラッシュ you put 2 twice) states "don't post silly one-liners". Does this include when people post "SOURCE!!" or "sauce pl0x!" or some other variant? If so, I think it should be stated.

Kayako, your howto:rate looks good. Questionable contains some things that I'd generally see in images I'd rate safe, but it's so utterly context dependent that you probably did as well as could be done.

The distinction between Q and S is something's that confused me sometimes in the past. At least, I think I used to rate some things Q (and still maybe some now) that should be S. The bit with "Most lingerie" is the only one in Kayako's descriptions that appears somewhat inconsistent to what I think at present, though. Wouldn't many of them that are "tasteful" (as with bikinis) be considered "Safe"?

I don't generally count lingerie as 'safe', although there are rare occasions. It's just based on the context and current way we view lingerie as a society.

It's normal to see girls in swimsuits out in public, but not in lingerie. It's generally considered a "sexy thing" and I can't imagine many employers consider girls in their underwear to be 'worksafe'.

Bah, of course you find it after I'm done.

Well I did come pretty close to albert's definitions, and having clearer guidelines could be helpful so I suppose it might still be okay? Check my work at the new howto:rate page.

Ah, perfect. I had been confused on one or two of my uploads on how to rate it, especially when looking through rating:q pussy. Thank you for this.

Edit: Come to think of it, it'd be really nice and useful to both new and seasoned uploaders if that were to be linked somewhere on the Upload page

Then again, if I caught one of my workers surfing the net to look at anime girls and pictures, I'd fire them immediately.

Ah, yeah, I will challenge the "most lingerie" concept. I think albert explicitly made a decision some time ago that bras or panties were not enough to warrant a "questionable" rating unless there was some other amplifying factor (like distinct cameltoe, or a really suggestive pose, etc).

We don't use a literal "worksafe" meaning of safe, because being on danbooru at all at work is a really horrible idea most of the time.
