A question about "Mark as Translated"

Hi. I know Japanese and recently made an account to do some translation in my free time after using the site anonymously for a long time.
I want to avoid stepping on anyone else's feet while translating, so I would like to confirm something.
When checking a translation or finishing a partial_translation that was already mostly done, does the "credit" for translating it go to the person who hits "Mark as Translated"?
I would assume not, and that instead who made what notes is what matters, but again I don't want to upset anyone by polishing/completing a translation that was mostly not my work.

As you can see in this example, every creation, deletion, and editing of a note is attributed to the user that did it. Every person involved in the process is "credited" individually for whatever changes they made. All that matters is the end result, not who was first or who was last.

It's generally considered good etiquette to leave something alone if there's someone that actively translates that pool or artist, but otherwise if something has sat untranslated or partially translated for a while, it's free for anyone who wants to tackle it.

I've been learning for six years, so I can only do simpler/some intermediate stuff, but I'm personally not bothered about people finishing stuff I'm doing.... or revising things I've done.

I noticed that my account page has a "Note Changes" page which led me to believe that was the case.
I'll try to keep an eye out for the bit about pools and artists, that hadn't occurred to me. Thanks!

It doesn't matter. You can just translate anything, or correct any mistakes you see. It's all volunteer work.

The “Note Changes” count every time you touched any note. If you create a note, it will increase by 1. If you edit or move a note someone else created, it will increase by 1. If you add/touch ten notes on a single image, it will increase by 10 even though you only translated one image.

There’s no counter for how often someone has clicked “Mark as Translated”. That said, that button simply removes the translation request tag and replaces it with translated, which will increase your “Post Changes” counter by 1. ;)

All I can say is that people can be touchy. If you start translating another pool that another translator has been doing all of the translating on, well, it may just piss them off enough that they may abandon that pool entirely. So unless you are prepared to take up that pool full time, hence forth and forevermore, then do wait a while at least before jumping on the translation train right away. This also applies to uploading as well as translating.

At the very least give the normal translator the courtesy of a DMail or leaving a note on the first untranslated page of the pool stating your intentions to take over it if there is no progress on it in like X days or so. This gives the translator the ability to either silently back out, or perhaps to chime in on their ability to continue work on that pool.

Of course, if a pool has been abandoned for like more than a month or so, then all bets are off, as we can't allow users to endlessly camp on a pool because they might "eventually get to it" one day.

Anyways, just a few thoughts from a long-time translator on this site.
