waistcoats redundant with vests?

BUR #14381 has been rejected.

create alias waistcoat -> vest

suit vest status:active count: 3348
waistcoat vest status:active count: 2529

These seem redundant, wikipedia claims that they're just regional names for the same article of clothing, and 69% (nice) (edit: copypasta, it's actually 52%) of waistcoats are already tagged as vests anyways. I know the topic's been brought up before, but given how relatively under-utilized the waistcoat tag is, I don't think we gain anything from keeping it separate.

Only 0.2% of waistcoat posts even had some sort of color_waistcoat tags, which is unusual for a clothing tag if it's actually being used. (edit: Since there were literally only 10 of them, I just swapped those over to the equivalent color_vest tags for discoverability.)

We also have sweater vest. Do we want these to be kept separate from waistcoats? Because I think a vest alias could lead to people mixing the two together. Reversing the alias and then depricating vest, or keeping all three and implicating sweater vest and waistcoat to vest as a parent tag are better options imo.

Yes, you made a point. Waistcoat is a type of formal, buttoned vest, based on what I read on Wikipedia. Sometimes featured in school uniforms like on post #5277080. Why should tags that specify a broader term of clothing article must be aliased? We did not even alias collared shirt or t-shirt into shirt. I originally wanted waistcoat to imply vest.

It's a pretty small minority of sweater_vests that are also tagged as vest, unlike waistcoat. I think that when most people see a more formal vest, they still just think "vest", not "waistcoat", but sweater vests look different so they don't really do the same thing. I'm not necessarily opposed to implicating sweater_vest, but I still can't see waistcoat actually ending up useful. If we actually want to keep waistcoat as a tag, then there's a lot of tagging that needs to be done. Right now the overwhelming majority of posts like post #5968495 or post #3127252 don't have it, so you'd kinda be better off searching vest -sweater_vest anyways.

BUR #14390 has been rejected.

create implication sweater_vest -> vest
create implication waistcoat -> vest
create implication load_bearing_vest -> vest
create implication bulletproof_vest -> vest
create implication cardigan_vest -> vest
create implication metamoran_vest -> vest
create implication high-visibility_vest -> vest
create implication fur-trimmed_vest -> vest
create implication life_vest -> vest
nuke uniform_vest
create implication impossible_vest -> vest
create implication print_vest -> vest
create implication leather_vest -> vest
create implication denim_vest -> vest
create implication ribbon-trimmed_vest -> vest
create implication studded_vest -> vest

If we did want to make vest into a true umbrella tag for every type of *_vest that overlaps with it, this BUR would look something like this, and then we'd need to go through vest -sweater_vest -waistcoat -load_bearing_vest -bulletproof_vest -cardigan_vest -metamoran_vest -high-visibility_vest -fur-trimmed_vest -life_vest -leather_vest -denim_vest -ribbon-trimmed vest -studded_vest -collared_vest -cropped_vest -frilled_vest -hooded_vest and categorize all the loose ones, which is probably about 100k posts.

I'm not actually proposing we do this.
