I would just tag this jacket. The coat and jacket tags in general need a serious cleanup, I feel like they're mistaken for each other frequently.

That's why it would be good to deprecate the tag instead of aliasing it, so posts like this don't get tagged coat.

What's the proper name for the outer garment in post #6242389 and post #6029754? Does it count as a coat? To me it's too thin and tight-fitting to be a coat -- and in an upper body shot I think almost anyone would tag it as a jacket and not coat -- but the length is distinctive and should be tagged as something more than just jacket when its length is visible. So I tag it long jacket. (You could call it a "suit coat" but we don't have that tag and we have a well-populated suit jacket tag.) I don't have a problem tagging that as coat if we have a consensus on that, but I want to be sure there is a consensus. And then would it still be tagged suit jacket as well or would we need a suit coat? Coat and jacket seem to have a lot of regional differences in how they're defined so we always seem to have disagreements on them.

To me personally, those look a lot more like coats than jackets

well, do you think more users who use long jacket are actually tagging a coat or a genuinely long jacket? (which we would still call coat). post #6152023 for example is a coat, not a long jacket. and post #6259628 is just a normal jacket, there's nothing long about it. an alias would fix obvious mistags like the first post and point honest misunderstandings like the second post in the right direction, back to jacket. nobody is going to look at this alias, again at the garment, and say "yep that's a coat". if they do, they should be smacked.

...unless it's the argument Super Affection brought up, in which case I can kind of understand. the difference between jacket and coat is not always clear-cut, especially given the clash between "clothing weight" and our separation of lengths. post #6260297 I would call a jacket from a real-world perspective, but its length still qualifies it as a coat. however I still think that keeping jacket for waist-length outerwear and coat for longer garments is the most practical way of doing things, because tagging based on "clothing weight" introduces subjectivity that would complicate an already muddled pair of tags.
