Deprecation of Player 2

Posted under Tags

According to its wiki, player 2 can be used for parodies while official alternate color could not, but with proper tagging something like alternate_color -official_alternate_color should work to specifically find parodies if someone wanted to do that for some reason. More precise tagging is better.

There might be some value in a new, better-named tag for images showing multiple versions of a character in different colors, unless variations is good enough.

Is there any particular reason for palette swap to exist when alternate color seems to fulfill pretty much the same function? I don't really get the difference between the two from the wiki definitions.

Here in lies the confusion. I would say that the difference is that Palette swaps denote a distinct change in a character's usual color scheme (different hair color, clothes etc.) where they otherwise appear the same. Alternate colors can broadly mean that any kind of color alteration can count as this. This is conjecture on my part, because when I see saw the palette swap tag for the first time, I assumed it was just in the context of any and all video games.

This one brings up a good point, I think the reason no one has decided to go through with it was because some of us understood that it was to be used for the specific case of the color palette present in the piece or the fact that it says 'Player 2' some where within the post.

i've noticed that currently player_2 implies alternate color but alternate color isn't supposed to be used with official alternate color, which means if a post uses an official palette swap it's going to get the wrong tag?

maybe player 2 should be a tag for only canonical palette swaps? pretty sure the reason this tag is called this way is because on pixiv it's also called "player 2" btw

This can be explained by the fact that alternate color did not have the official/unofficial distinction that alternate costume has, which inspired official alternate costume and, from there, all the other official alternate tags (forum #371690). Also, shiny pokemon, another official alternate color scheme, also implies alternate color.
