Creating earpiece_headset

BUR #34398 has been rejected.

mass update earpiece headset -id:4968824 -id:5830227 -id:7050651 -id:7050652 -id:7667602 -id:7672187 -> -headset earpiece_headset
create implication earpiece_headset -> earpiece

This BUR aims to create a tag that will (eventually) allow headset to imply headphones. That was previously attempted in topic #27271, but got a single negative reply and was subsequently shut down with almost no votes. I will address that reply here.

A headset doesn't actually need to be headphones and could be earphones, especially a singular earphone affixed to one ear. Ex: post #3622078, post #5997276.

If you Google "headset", 99% of the results are a pair of headphones. A couple of them are single-ear devices, but it's not even close - outside of Danbooru, headsets are almost universally considered to be "headphones with an attached mic".

If you Google "earpiece", you do get single-ear devices, many of which feature a mic. However, Danbooru's earpiece wiki clearly states that "an earpiece does not have a microphone." Again, this is a definition that does not exist outside of Danbooru.

There seems to be an underlying desire to tag the following:

  • headphones
    • headphones with a mic
  • earpieces
    • earpieces with a mic

However, no tag was ever created for that last case, and as such users seem to be tagging them as either headset or earpiece based on nothing more than personal preference. I'd like to create such a tag, so that we might finally fix this mess.

The BUR will update every post in the earpiece headset search to the new tag (while excluding all the false positives), but with the relatively low amount of posts it will fix it's more for voting purposes than anything else.

Could I get some feedback on this?

I'd say there should be an earpiece tag that includes the mic. Like how headphones that has a mic is a headset and vice versa.

We have earpiece.

We can also have an earpiece with mic tag.

I don't know what to call it though.

What is your distinction between earpiece, earpiece headset, and headset? It's easier if you just make the tag so I can see what you have in mind.

I guess it's something like:

  • earpiece: Earphone that goes in a single ear. May or may not have an attached mic.
  • earpiece headset: Earphone that goes in a single ear, and has an attached mic.
  • headset: Headphones with an attached mic. The headphones cover both ears. (Or maybe only a single ear, but it covers the whole ear and has a headband, as opposed to going inside the ear and not having a headband, like an earpiece headset would?).

The problem is that for many posts tagged headset, all you can really see is the mic. You can't see both ears or what the mic is attached to, so it's really hard to tell whether it's headphones or earphones or a single earpiece or what. Sometimes the mic is attached to nothing, it's just magically there with nothing in the ears. A large number at least don't qualify as headphones, so they would have to be moved to earpiece headset or whatever if you want headset to imply headphones. I think it would be easier to just leave headset as "anything with a mic" and move all the stuff under earpiece that has a mic over to headset.

If that's what we do the wikis need to elaborate on the distinction of these tags and give clear instructions on how they show be used, the userbase has some confusions about their relationship, a lot of posts that are headset + headphones are currently missing one tag or the other. Though it's no news that most people don't read the wikis anyway, it'll at least make sure those who read won't be lost even after referring to the wikis (like I was, the headset wiki was even more confusing before updates were made last year).

Ideally, the distinctions would be as follows:

If earpiece_headset seems too obtuse of a name, I don't mind if it ends up being something like earpiece_with_mic instead. The main issue is that currently, the only one of these things that can be reliably searched for is headphones. The other three are all tagged interchangeably in accordance with the whims of whoever is tagging them, which makes searching for any one of them a pain in the ass.

As I mentioned before, this problem does not exist outside of Danbooru. In the real world, "headset" is universally understood to be "headphones with a mic", and "earpiece" is universally understood to be "a single-ear receiver". In fact, they're so universal that if you search Google images for these words, they account for 99% of the results. It's this kind of tagging incongruousness that especially incenses me - if you asked any random person on the street what these things are, they'd be able to tell you, unless they happened to use Danbooru in which case they'd shrug and say "Uh, iunno."

The problem is that for many posts tagged headset, all you can really see is the mic. A large number at least don't qualify as headphones, so they would have to be moved to earpiece headset or whatever if you want headset to imply headphones.

If the only thing you see is a mic, then I think it's fine to assume it's an earpiece_headset and tag it as such. It's easy to imagine a small earpiece being hidden behind some hair, but headphones are too bulky for that assumption to make sense. It's like how we tag post #8751800 as pantyhose, because even though it could be thighhighs it just makes more sense this way.
