I'm not sure if the Mario vs. Donkey Kong tag should be used for the whole series, or just the first game. Most posts with the later games' tags are also tagged with Mario vs. Donkey Kong, so I assume it's the former, but I'm making two BURs just in case.

Option #2.

If this goes through, Donkey Kong (Game Boy) would need to be have Mario (Series) implied too, as while that's not as upfront about being a Mario game (he's not in the title for one), he's still prominently in the game.

I guess you could argue Donkey Kong Jr. (Game) too based on the story (https://www.mariowiki.com/Donkey_Kong_Jr._(game)) and maybe the original but it's a bit weirder there; NoA says it's Mario but some sources say it was Jumpman and Mario wasn't "finalized" yet.

I'm a bit on the fence regarding this game, as it is a Donkey Kong spinoff, but from what I can tell, no DK characters other than Diddy appear (correct me if I'm wrong; I haven't played it).

The Nintendo 64 version only has Diddy Kong, featuring Banjo and Conker as crossover characters. Meanwhile, there's also a Nintendo DS version that removes Banjo and Conker (Microsoft had purchased Rare at the time) and replaces them with Dixie Kong and Tiny Kong.

Otherwise, it is as you said, none of the other characters in the game have any connection to DK.

Piggybacking on this thread to throw this out there. All of the appearances of "Jumpman" in posts are tagged Mario, fwiw. I would argue that most people would say that's Mario.

All three are from the relatively brief stint at the beginning where the games featured both Mario and Donkey Kong, and neither had their own franchise yet. They can be considered to be both Mario games and Donkey Kong games, and should imply both series tags.
