I created this tag to be able to search for video-game abilities being used in-game. Think the buttons that you press while playing a game, or a castbar.

Is this exclusive to abilities actually found within the copyright(s) or are things that are merely made to resemble those acceptable?

I think those should count. The tag will be easier to manage if taggers don’t have to worry about whether the ability is “canon,” especially with the MMORPG / gacha game examples.

How vital is it that the icon appear in the image? If it is essential, then maybe we should name this gameplay ability icon, or just ability icon, instead? We probably don’t want this ending up on every post showing Ryu launching a hadouken or Mario jumping.

As I see it, it's probably not vital that an icon appear but it should probably be imagery or text that indicates a specific ability and would itself qualify for gameplay_mechanics so that it's not just "character does thing they do in the video game"
