Alias sword_guard_stance to ox_guard

Posted under Tags

BUR #41025 is pending approval.

create alias sword_guard_stance -> ox_guard
remove alias sword_guard_stance -> ox_guard
deprecate sword_guard_stance
create alias ochs_guard -> ox_guard
create alias posta_de_fenestra -> ox_guard
create alias kasumi_no_kamae -> ox_guard

"Sword guard stance" is very ambiguous, and can refer to a large number of different guards. The tag we have under this name is specifically for one of them, the ox guard, and as such should be renamed.

The guard is also known by its German, Italian, and Japanese names, which I've added as utility aliases.

:/ vote bc it would make more sense to me to keep the sword_guard_stance tag and then implicate ox_guard and some other sword guard types to it. At very least, since sword guard stance can mean more than just one pose in reality, idk if having it implicate to only one type of stance would make sense either

But I dont have major skin in this game, so will leave it to those more experienced than me to take this into consideration and tell me if my pov is wrong or not

That could still happen, but I think that'd require more of these sword guards to be tagged. That actually relates to a question that I have, which is whether or not the tag consists solely of ox guards or not. The tag's name is ambiguous enough to allow for those kinds of mistags, and that'd probably be the first place to check for other guards to tag.

While having a parent tag for guards sounds good in theory, what I found when researching this is that most guards are actually rather generic. Many of them are just slightly varied ways of holding a sword at waist or chest height; the ox guard is one of the few that are unique enough to actually stand out amongst regular holding_sword posts. I don't think we need a parent tag that only a few arbitrary sword holds fall under.

Especially amongst the more recent posts, yes; there are mistags. I'm cleaning them up as we speak.

Edit: finished.

For the deprecated wiki besides just links to any existing specific stances, could examples also be included to avoid the need to dig between different wikis to know the correct one.

Of course.

Source on ox guard being the most common term? Google is returning everything except sword guards for me.

A brand of anti-oxidant called Ox-Gard seems to be mucking up the results, but if you switch to Google Images, it's pretty immediately obvious.

I don't know for sure if it's the most common name, but it's common enough that, given we're an English-speaking site, it's best to use the English name with the rest as utility aliases.
