False unrecognized login location warnings

Posted under Bugs & Features

Lately, I have been getting a message when trying to log in claiming I'm trying to log in from an unrecognized location. There are only two devices I ever used to log in, and my location has not changed. I also do not use VPNs to log in. Fortunately, I was able to get in through the link in the automatic email.

I occasionally delete my browsing information, cookies, etc. from my browser. I suspect it may be related to the login issues, but deleting these never prevented me from accessing the site until recently. A similar issue happened last month and the verification links didn't even work back then. I planned to report that too, but I able to get in not too long after, so I assumed it was a bug that was already fixed. I don't know if this is another bug or if the site security now requires cookies to work properly. Either way, I would like to be able to clear out my browser without worrying about losing access. Can something be done about this?

Edit: The specific message was "New login location detected. Check your email to continue."

This happens when you login from a new IP address. You can go to Settings > Security > Account History to see your login history. It looks like your ISP is changing your IP address every so often, which causes you to have to verify the new IP.

You can avoid these emails by enabling Two-Factor Authentication for your account under Settings > Security. Unfortunately stolen passwords are so common these days that we can't rely on passwords alone, we have to use either 2FA or email verification to make sure any new logins are really you.

I just confirmed my IP address is changing about once or twice a month. I tried clearing my history again just to make absolutely sure it wasn't also causing problems and I was able to log in just fine.

I can live with the email verification if I only need to do it a couple times a month. Thanks for the help.
