About the pussy tags

Posted under Tags

I know this won't have positive reception given my previous threads on some of your tag names, but i still wanted to express my personal dislike of the pussy_* tags.

pussy is kind of a crude slang term to reference the female genitalia, the vagina, and this is in stark contrast to penis which is the formal term for male genitalia. In fact, I can't find many other examples of the tags opting for a slang term over the more standard one for human anatomy. You're using testicles, scrotum piercing, even clitoris and cervix and pussy just sounds off when compared with these more formal terms. There is ass instead of butt, and for the record I would prefer butt, but at least that word is a lot more mild.

Even if unintentionally so, pussy sounds inconsistent and slightly sexist and results in some strange tag names such as penis on pussy. It's not common to mix formal and slang terms like this, and here people would be more likely to say something like dick on pussy. Some of it just sounds unpleasant like pussy juice, can't explain why but that sounds icky, and vaginal fluid would be a lot better.

I would prefer it if either the male genitalia was changed to use slang terms - dick, cock, balls or the more standard word for female genitals was used, vagina. Using words of the same level of formality is more consistent and would avoid possible perception of sexism in the naming.

uh, akchsually ☝️🤓, vagina is the term for the internal organ, the external part is called vulva

It's true that "vulva" is the more accurate term for the whole female genatalia. However, it probably sounds too medical, and "vagina" is more often used in common language also to refer to the whole thing.

It isn't like you are new to twisting the meaning of words, in a way. I already mentioned pantyhose encompassing many things that weren't pantyhose.

The user in the original thread was probably a bit impolite with their message, but I still agree with what they said. Pussy sounds weirdly out of place and is too vulgar.

Sorry, but pussy is handsdown the best word for that tag, as otherwise you get into way too many semantics.

As someone more bothered by people being annoyed by the "vulgarity" (despite us having way more obsence stuff), I have no idea why folks are so upset by it. It's not even "out of place" when ass is right there.

it's true that we're weirdly inconsistent about the naming of lewd tags. you'll find cases of medical terms (penis), slang terms (cum as opposed to semen), and "the thing you just said, but in Japanese" (paizuri), all living in this strange coexistence. if you want my take, i think we should pick one degree of lewdity and stick to it in our naming whenever reasonable god knows nobody wants to rename paizuri to mammary intercourse, but expect to get a lot of pushback.

that being said, you'd have my support for renaming pussy juice to vaginal fluids or something similar, simply because i find it to be a disgusting tag name.

It's because you use the word penis. ass is somewhat vulgar too, but it's gender neutral. With all due respect, I always found using the formal penis with the slang pussy a bit strange, especially when the context is often in sexual intercourse. It may give the impression that the girl is being thought of as "lesser", even if it clearly wasn't the intention. That's why I said i'd prefer changing the penis to dick if you don't want to change pussy, as long as the formality is similar.

As a woman myself, I always found more proper terms for the genitalia to be a bit of a mouthful. I geniunely prefer "pussy" over other terms, as otherwise it breaks down over semantics, as seen above.

On the flipside, I'm not terribly averse to a penis rename, but I personally am of the opinion the current set-up is fine, as honestly, in this case, the terminology isn't really the issue I think, in the long run.

Oh wow - I had no idea I kinda assume everyone is male online.

If woman don't have an issue with it, I guess its not a big deal. I was mainly basing this on the fact that I'd find it slightly odd if it were reversed and the slang dick was used together with formal vagina. Other woman are welcome to give their input of course, if you take issue with these terms.

I don't want to be the only one commenting on this if it turns out to not be a problem.

It's important to understand that our tagging practices prioritize functionality over political correctness. While I believe there is merit in trying to keep offensiveness to a minimum, it cannot be done at the expense of users' ability to search and it is not enough of a reason on its own to justify more tagging work.

If you think a tag name is offensive, you need to be able to offer a viable substitute. If it cannot provide greater or equal functionality to what we're already using, there's no way it will be accepted.

Since your issue with the tags seem to be inconsistent vulgarity rather than the terms themselves, changing penis to dick and testicles to balls would probably be an easier position to argue for since they're one-to-one.

There's more women out there on Danbooru at least than you might think. Obviously, I'm just one person and I can't speak for everyone of my gender, but I personally don't find it offensive and know enough other women who don't find it offensive who'd agree with me.

Honestly, I find it more demeaning for men to speak for women about these things, which I think is what really irritates me about these specific complaints about the pussy tags. If it were merely about the inconsistency, I don't think I'd care like I do, even if I disapprove of the rename. That's my two cents at least, as someone who mostly uploads SFW but has zero issues engaging and discussing NSFW.

If the issue is merely the Danbooru typical inconsistency (which isn't unusual), I don't see a problem proposing a change to penis. While I personally don't like the idea of changing them (as then you're going to have do things like with, say, ball to ball (object)), I do like consistency and also, the penis tags don't have the semantics breakdown problem pussy has, making it more viable if we really wanna go that route.

It bothers me, and I find it distasteful, but there are worse words that could be the tag name so I guess it is what it is. I think it's stupid to argue that "vagina" isn't an acceptable solution because the anatomical term is narrower than what the tag encompasses. In common vernacular it's the genitalia as a package, I don't see how that'd be confusing as a tag name.

The fact that we use crude slang for some terms but not others as discussed above is a bit eye-twitching as the autism demands consistency, but I doubt we'll reach a consensus on changing all of them to one or the other so...

Chiming in as another woman, the inconsistency between it and penis is what bugs me, so I guess I echo my fellows here for wanting consistency. And pussy, while not my favorite word in the world, is a lot better than some other slang options for it (mainly "cunt" which would be awful).

I think the ship has mostly sailed, though.

If it were to be renamed, just switching vulva to be the canonical name and pussy to be the alias would probably be the best option. We already have some other tags that use the term vulva anyway, like partially_visible_vulva.

Using "vagina" to refer to the entirety of the external female genitalia would just be trading one colloquialism for another.

It might be worth noting that e621 had the same thoughts and they renamed some of the moderately vulgar tags like pussy and ass. Here are some of their threads if you want to reference some of their discussion as well. pussy renamed

Butt appears to be a much older change and could only find some glancing discussion here
