So, I'm not quite sure what's going on here, but there's both Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica and Mahou_Shoujo_Madoka_Magica. Furthermore, even though it's supposed to be Puella Magi X Magica as the title pattern, Kazumi and Oriko both use Mahou_Shoujo_Kazumi_Magica and Mahou_Shoujo_Oriko_Magica respectively, rather than the expected Puella_Magi_*...
Am I missing something here, or is something being missed?

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is aliased to Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, so no there are not both tags, only the latter.
Also forum #54066. Tl;dr Kanji > bad Latin.
Then I don't think it's working right - there's far more hits for Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica than there are Mahou_Shoujo_Madoka_Magica, at least when I search for it... either that or the results were displayed incorrectly.
The post counter is known for often being spectacularly wrong. Sometimes the count includes deleted posts with that tag, sometimes it doesn’t. And sometimes it’s negative.
If you’re not sure which tag is more popular or whether they’re really aliased, search for one and exclude the other, then swap, like so:

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica elsewhere. And since Danbooru is Japanese-based, we use the tag mahou_shoujo_madoka_magica.
