I'm bias to that notion as well, but Sariel's gender was never specified so it can't be said for sure. Though, because of this it does bother me that people automatically assume Sariel to be female when the artist's interpretation shows no obvious signs of being female.
Another thing to consider is that angels are sometimes viewed to be androgynous and genderless.
