Yeah, apparently she's an escaped princess who disguises as a boy to avoid being captured or killed.

In the book, she has a rather scruffy look, lanky build, and initially acts like a tomboy. Thus, she can easily pass as a boy if she's not properly groomed and dressed to look like the princess she actually is.
