Did he ever do any actual ruling, though? He's the perfect example of a conqueror, but he didn't really devote much effort to maintenance and/or reform of the realm.

There's a debate over it? I can see why religiously-inclined people would complain that one of the most badass men in the history of Humanity was gay, but back in the age of Ancient Greece, there was nothing wrong with it. It was fashionable to have young men as lovers when you were badass.

I think he meant debate over whether he was bisexual, or if he was gay. That he loved men wasn't in question, but if he also loved women is.
