Seeing Momiji cower in fear in the "being petted" panel really stabs at me. I'm with a few of the others here, and pessimistically assume that this is all part of a cyclical abusive relationship, though I'd much prefer the far unlikelier "It's another kind hearted dude taking her in"

This would sound so mean, but this is the same reaction with a bad-treated or stray dogs. They react with the same fear when you try to pet them.
