    if you want to get technical about it, the dash in technolo-gy is nessacary for it to continue on a new line...

    A ton of bits of FMA did that. It was some... weird decision by the animators to save time, I suppose. There's a part of an alchemy book that actually has paragraphs from a Dungeons and Dragons manual.

    That's because they knew little written english...or more likely, they knew their target audience knew little of it. It's a time saver really. They knew if the words looked like what you would see in an Jap-english dictionary nobody would really care or notice.

    Those that did, thought it was funny and didn't bother to change it later.
