So named because it is the time when the antlers of buck deer regrow.
"Buck Moon" is a term for the July full moon. Early references to the Buck Moon claim that it is a "Native American" term without specifying a language or nation. More recently it is sometimes claimed to be Algonquin; if this is true, it does not appear to be in common use in any Algonquian language today (as far as I can tell from internet research). Takiyuḣa-wi, "Deer Rutting Moon," seems to exist in the Lakota language and more or less coincide with July, however.
