The End of the Feast
While sheltering from the rain in a cave deep in the mountains, a young woman dressed like a traveling performer entered.
When I shared my lunch with her, she began to sing in gratitude, shamisen in hand.
The song she sang, about the man-eating oni that once abducted people and committed unspeakable atrocities on Mt. Oe, was terrifying, yet evoked a sense of melancholy.
When the girl finished singing, I noticed the rain had stopped, and the sun was shining through the clouds.
Turning around, the girl was gone, and the shadow of the rock, illuminated by candlelight, flickered eerily like the head of a oni.
