Maybe it has something to do with the whole notion that her arm turns to ash when she breaks her ascetic hermit "no worldly desires" thing?
As in, she reaches into her shirt, starts flicking the bean, and then her age starts catching up with her and she starts disintegrating until she stops doing it.
The author says that people who didn't read up until the 8th chapter (of ibara kasen i guess) wont get it. I'm guilty of not reading the manga as well.

I don't blame you. The printworks have a bad track record of low integrity for being "official" works. I blame deadlines and Zun's hands off approach with collaboration partners.
