Aside from Marisa's hakkero being completely useless in the water. Isn't it natural for mermaids to pull people to their watery grave?

    Not really.

Generally speaking, mermaids vary based on the culture, time period and location. That said, most mythologies don't consider mermaids to be violent/dangerous creatures. (And then of course, there are mythologies which consider them to be good luck)

No, Sailors consider them to be good luck. Germanic folklore's Lorelei and the Greek Sirens were mermaid-prototypes and are both horrendously dangerous in their respective mythologies.

Except Japan was largely uninfluenced by Greek and Germanic folklore, yet they don't consider mermaids to be dangerous (for the most part). Native Americans have their own mermaid mythologies and (generally speaking) most of them aren't violent/dangerous either.

Unless I'm mistaken, didn't pretty much any creature in Greek mythology kill any humans foolish enough to go near them in incredibly horrifying manners?

This sinking feeling feels more like that it should be Murasa that's doing the drowning, although no boat, so Wakasagihime will have to do

In ukrainian and russian mythology there are creatures called "Mavka". They are spirits of a dead girls, died by cruel and not natural death. It more youkais than ghosts so. Their river species called "Rysalka" and looks pretty like mermaids. All of those spirits, being embodiment of death, are very dangerous for humans and does things like Wakasagihime in that picture. Girl that died by the hands of mavka also become mavka.
