Makes me wonder about Lexington V (CV-16) and her glowing record (she's 'the Blue Ghost' after all). I think everyone would hate her, since she was the Flagship of the Fast Carrier Task Force whenever they actually did anything worth mentioning... so, you could effectively say that, in Kancolle terms, she was one of the two masterminds (along with 'Black Dragon' New Jersey) behind most of the late war ship sinkings...

You know, along with the unrestricted submarine warfare and the generally aggressive tactics of the USN submarine force; you'll think that the submarines, if they had personalities, would consist of more than a few mental irregularities here and there.

Not really, the Surface Fleet was pretty similar in their aggressiveness, just they weren't stealthy enough to slip behind enemy lines (this is partially due to the fact that IJN Sonar was even more pitiful than their radar...).

From my research (that would be speaking to sailors, vets, and others [staff at the museums, historians, etc]), the Gato-class were generally considered to be young ladies, between 16 and 20 years of age, mild tempered, and even quite sweet and innocent.

The Albacore was considered to match this image outwardly, but be a Hard-Knocks No-Nonsense Ship-Shape type individual on the inside, that would punish herself for failing to achieve her own quota. Very military, and a bit of a loner, but still somehow kind.
In my mind, she'd be very similar to as this guy sees her (probably because I actually know the guy). His ideas for her stats though are a little out there, and he makes a few mistakes in his historical comments... but, meh.
(I actually like Kazemura's design more, but agree that it doesn't match Albacore's personality)

If you're wanting mental irregularities, the Cavalla is the one you want. She's the vixen of the bunch, has a massive inferiority complex (that's not actually directed at anyone in general), and by some accounts comes across as quite sadistic during combat, if not outright suicidal.
Probably because she survived in active service into the 50/60s era when US Sailors were a little more perverse.

Sweet girl image, although perhaps they would understand why Japanese ships would run screaming from them. I wonder about Mingo, the Gato-class who went to the JMSDF, although there were a whole bunch of former adversaries that the USN exchanged with the new JMSDF to restart their navy.

Alright, if I'll create a doujinshi, (I really need to get some of those equipments), these personalities I would gave to them (this is only my opinion, so please take it easy on me.)

Probably I'll make a part 2, just to include some of the notable subs that I miss. (Men I should write a book about this).

I only base most of them on their history, specification, any other useful information I can find in the internet, and from what other people think. While anything else, I'm trying making lucky guesses.

You forgot USS Harder, which sunk 5, possibly 6, Japanese destroyers (only one of which is a Kanmuse) and USS Flasher, which sunk Ooi and was the highest scoring submarine in tonnage.

Actually, in response to what you quoted, from my memory the Harder was not one of the submarines that preferred service with the Albacore.
Her commander, Samuel D. Dealey, wasn't remotely hostile to the Albacore's methods, but believed that the backbone of any navy were the destroyers and therefore preferred targeting them (which also had the advantage of making the water safer for submarines...).
The Albacore and her crews (likewise with the others I listed), while sympathetic with Commander Dealey's opinion, preferred striking at the largest and most expensive target available, since they believed that the most effective way to end a war was to attack your (financially weaker) opponent's wallets. This is why most of them went after the Large Merchant ships or other targets of high value.

Therefore, being in the same group with each other didn't allow them to operate efficiently, so both of them found it problematic when they were forced to work together.

She sunk Ikazuchi though, so a lot of Teitoku would want to murder her.

Seriously, to tell the truth, I helped Kibehisa (the guy I linked to earlier) create his designs (Though, in my opinion, he got Hornet VIII 'slightly' wrong... twice).
He calls me a member of his 'doujin circle', even though I unfortunately hardly ever have the time for that sort of thing.
So, if you want to see how I'd design her you can just go there. However, I don't know how well the personality we worked out for her came across through the script; and, as I mentioned, he made a few blunders with his history (but likely won't change them because lazy... and I'm no one to tell him off for it).
(Honestly, I think he might have gone a bit too far with his presentation, since he included everything from cards to her stats and equipment...)

Speaking of submarines specifically, we haven't really 'finished' anyone but Albacore II and Cavalla, with Harder, Batfish (who is only there as a Imuya equivalent), and Sealion II well underway, and Archerfish sitting on back burner for now.
We decided to limit ourselves to those as to not outnumber the Japanese ships... and also, there's the issue that US Submarines are the equivalent of IJN Torpedo Cruisers with high ASW capability...

I have yet no idea what he intends to do next however (I know he's working on a height comparison chart that shows off several of his/our originals juxtaposed with the Kancolle girls, but I don't know if he intends to post that or not), so it could be a while before the rest of the submarines are put up.

I didn't realize you were listing off subs that worked with Albacore, I thought you were just listing subs with many sinkings.

Submarines

Albacore

Most of the people thought of her as a horrifying sadistic delinquent which only brings despair to people because of her terrifying facial expressions, but the truth is she's gentle and nice who just wants to have friends. She's also a diligent girl though she easily panics when creating a mistake. When no particular thing to do, she'll just probably spends her time practicing her combat skills. In battle, she's a front-liner but she's an opportunist and waits for a right time to attack, she's also good in judgement, though she most of the time she preferred working on solo, she can properly coordinate with her teammates to launch an effective attack against their opponents. After a fight, she always think of something that might improve herself for the next engagement.

Hairstyle: Hmm, probably I'll give her short side-ponytail.
Kancolle Equivalent: Mix of Kaga and Shiranui.
Introduction: "USS Albacore SS-218 reporting for duty... hmm? you've been staring at me quite often, is there something wrong?"

Archerfish

An enigmatic and creepy self-proclaimed scientist girl. She tells people that she is a scientist. She's very fond of marine geography. She's always fascinated on several topics about exploring the deep sea, she even sometimes get aroused when discussing it to someone. She even thinks that the Shinkaisei-kan not as an enemies but rather misunderstood creatures who needed to study to understand more about them. When she doesn't doing something she spends her time reading books, or if you decided to check her, you'll hear loud ambiguous clanking sounds inside her room. During battle, she's a balance fighter, she can use good judgement in the battlefield, but expect her having an arousal stimulation whenever she sees an inside of a Shinkaisei-kan.

Hairstyle: Long braided twintails.
Kancolle Equivalent: none for now, I don't think someone in the current kanmusu had a personality like this.

Cavalla

Probably the opposite of Albacore, an energetic, curious, obnoxious, genki girl. She's an innocent girl but full of curiosity. She's talkative and very obnoxious, she asks a lot of questions and tells irrelevant stories which can bother you, her sisters, and other kanmusus. But despite of her super obnoxious personality, she's very sweet and clingy, she'll surely loves when you gave her a pat on her head and give her praise. If she has nothing particular thing to do, she wanders around the base, feeding that endless curiosity of her, which eventually will bother you about it. She also has a habit of unexpectedly popping out of nowhere even though she isn't needed. During battles, her tactics are rather harsh and reckless, she ambush her enemies without thinking, she also likes to work alone, or probably she usually wanders off far away from her teammates.

Hairstyle: I'll give hair short pigtails.
Kancolle Equivalent: A good mix of Iku and Yuudachi.
Introduction: "Hello I'm USS Cavalla SS-224, I bet you heard of Mariannas don't ya, yes I was there!"

Dace

A passive, quiet, gentle, humble, and somehow caring girl. She's had less confidence about herself. But despite that she's very passive, she's very kind at heart, she won't think twice lending a helping hand for her allies. Also She's a huge fan of Italian culture, her favorite food are pasta and pizza. She also have a passion for artworks, she has a very wide knowledge about artworks of famous people. When nothing to do, she spends her time making several drafts and sketches on her art book. During battle, despite of her lack of confidence, she a skillful fighter, she can see through the battlefield, and can quickly makes rational decisions.

Hairstyle: A side ponytail which is placed at left.
Kancolle Equivalent: A mix of Natori, Haruna, and Akigumo.
Introduction: "Um, American Submarine Dace here... uh, I'll do my best to serve the fleet!"

Darter

The exact opposite of Dace, an active, sporty, cheerful, happy-go-lucky girl. She's quite high on spirit and posses a great amount of stamina which seems to be doesn't run out. She's very active even at night which surely bothers people around. She always shows her wide cheerful grin at people and always gives them her thumbs-up. When nothing to do, she challenges people around just for her amusement. During battle, another front-liner who challenges her opponent with high spirit.

Hairstyle: A side ponytail which is placed at right.
Kancolle Equivalent: A mix of Kako and Nagara.
Introduction: "Hooah, American Submarine Darter reporting for duty, aright, let the fun begins!"

Growler

A rather composed and well-organized girl, she's wise and very confident on her decisions. Her personality makes a natural leader because she was considered as the leader of the Ben's Busters wolf pack along with Sealion and Pampanito. She's also quite easy to approach, she'll help you plan a better strategy for the next engagements. If you somehow raised her flag, she becomes timid and will somehow commit mistakes. While nothing to do, she'll probably with you discussing for the next engagement. During battle, she priorities the safeness of her allies rather than herself, she's even willing to sacrifice her life for the sake of her comrades.

Hairstyle: Short braided hair.
Kancolle Equivalent: Kirishima
Introduction: "USS Growler SS-215 here to serve the commander, let's do our best together."

Mingo

An adorable, childish, honest, and somewhat diligent girl. Since she's a Gato-class submarines, she works hard to become like her sisters. If she had an achievement, even the slightest of things, she'll going to boast it to you and she'll demands you to praise her. Most of the people around her especially her sisters treat her like a child which she dislikes. She's an easy tease target but she demands that you take her seriously. Also she loves anything related to Japan, when she has nothing to do, she usually spends her time watching her favorite animes. During battles, she also works diligently to score a victory against her opponents and to earn your praise.

Hairstyle: Possibly short hair
Kancolle Equivalent: A mix of Akatsuki, Ikazuchi, and Yuubari.
Introduction: "American Submarine Mingo-chan here, alright, let's do this!"

Sand Lance

A stoic, emotionless, and deadpan girl. She's a girl which will not move as long as you tell her. She also rarely speaks, but when she speaks you couldn't feel any emotions from her words. But despite of her emotionless attitude, she possess an undying loyalty for the commander. A possible Kuudere. She speaks on a third person manner. When nothing particular thing to do, she's just standing, standing and waiting. During battles, she's very focus on a fight, she ignores any possible obstacles around her as long as she can pursue her target.

Hairstyle: Short hair with long bangs which covers her right eye.
Kancolle Equivalent: A mix of Hibiki and Hyuuga.
Introduction: "Balao-class submarine, USS Sand Lance SS-381... please administer Sand Lance for now on."

Sealion

An aggressive, cold, anti-social, and foul-mouthed girl. Her brusque and aggressiveness towards to people can caused several headaches and quite hard to tame. Because of this she's typically seen alone. She only trusts limited people around her which includes Tang, Tinosa, Growler, and Pampanito. She hates when you bother her for pointless stuff. Also expect honest answers from her since she's a very truthful to herself and to other people. She's a possible tsundere once her flag is raised. When nothing particular thing to do, she optimizes her equipments so that it'll function well for the next use. In battle, she's quite an heroic type, she sacrifices her safety for the sake of a successful mission, also enemies will probably have a hard time to bring her down.

Hairstyle: probably long single braided ponytail.
Kancolle Equivalent: I couldn't think of someone anti-social enough to fit her other than Shiranui.
Introduction: "Sealion here... what are you looking at, give me an order!"

Tunny

An arrogant, mischievous, and fiendish girl. She ignores what might the outcome of her decision as long as it benefits her. She's also a liar, really loves telling lies mostly about everything, which somehow a social issue since she cannot truthfully express herself. She's quite self-centered, she becomes extremely arrogant when boasting her achievements. She also have a habit of scaring people which she found amusing. But despite of her downside nature, she's very brave and ready to tackle any adversities that will come. When nothing to do, she spends her time trolling people. During battle, she's very aggressive which prone to recklessness, she doesn't care if it would endanger someone as long as she scores a victory for herself, she also constantly mocks her opponents.

Hairstyle: Short twintails.
Kancolle Equivalent: Tatsuta for the same level of trolling
Introduction: "American sub Tunny here, I'll be assign here for now on. "

Submarines 2

Balao

A kind, sweet, and a very reasonable girl. She's quite compatible to most of the other submarines. She's a good friend of Gato, she helps Archerfish on her rediculous experiments, she can decipher Sand Lance's emotion, and she also support Redfish ambitions to become an actress. She's very cool-headed and calm when solving problems perhaps she acts very mature at her age. When she has nothing to do, she helps other Kanmusus on their problems. During battles, since she's very compatible among the other submarine girl, she can properly execute good coordinated attacks with the rest of her teammates.

Hairstyle: Short hair with ahoge
Kancolle Equivalent: A mix of Imuya, Yamato, and Haruna.
Introduction: "USS Balao, lead of the Balao-class sub, it's a pleasure meeting you."

Barb

She's a constant serious, military minded, straight-to-the-point girl who couldn't even take a simple joke. She's very dedicated to her duties and doesn't allow distraction. She's also very well-mannered when meeting other people. Her constant seriousness is somehow intimidating. Probably Pampanito is the only ship that could mess around with her. She constantly speaks Italian. When nothing to do, she'll probably wait for next assignment. During battle, she's very calm and composed in the battlefield and she usually leads her teammates. Also she could easily slip through behind enemy lines. Note that she's the first submarine to used rockets for bombardment.

Hairstyle: short hair which covers her ears.
Kancolle Equivalent: A mix of Kaga and Hyuuga.
Introduction: "Ciao, USS Bard SS-220, ready to be deployed, give me your commands commander."

Flasher

She's a very ill-patient and verbally abusive but somehow sweet girl who just wanted attention. She's an extreme case of Tsundere. She will always finds a thing to complain whatever how you run things around the base and will say nasty stuff about you. Though secretly she's been watching you and she cannot live without seeing you every single day. She'll be sad if you are not around, but she extremely denies it. Whenever having an achievement she will boast it to you but the truth is that she just wanted to be praise by you. During battle, she's also very skillful, she's quite versatile and can quickly adopt whatever situation in the battlefield. She's also very quick on her actions and decisions, she immediately grabs whatever opportunity comes. Though she extremely denies it, she will do anything for the sake of the commander.

Hairstyle: middle length twintails.
Kancolle Equivalent: A mix of Shimakaze, Kasumi, and Murakumo.
Introduction: "Flasher here... ... uhm, U-UWWAAAH, s-stop staring at me, stupid!!"

Gato

She's an average everyday girl. She's probably the most normal person you could meet among the Gato-class submarines. Though she loves diving within the deep seas, she does everything normally. Since her character is so plain, most of the people around her miss to notice her. She's also a good friend of Missouri. When nothing to do, she spends her time whatever occupies her. During battle, she's very calm and she's very balance of her tactics in battle. I'll note that she'll be the most common USN submarine to obtain.

Hairstyle: short braided ponytail.
Kancolle Equivalent: Fubuki
Introduction: "Lead of the Gato-class, USS Gato SS-212 reporting for duty, I'll do my best to serve the fleet."

Harder

An organized, resourceful, perfectionist, and absolutely frugal girl. She's very aware about the current resources and resource conservation, she will get mad she knew that you've been spending too much resources. She despise wasteful people. Other kanmusus, especially her sisters, thought of her as cheapskate. She'll always remind you that you must save resources for important stuffs. She's also very aware of time, as much as possible she will demands to that you send her to an expedition when she had nothing to do. Even in battles she doesn't waste time, she's also the first to charge the enemy, she strikes fast and hard, and she desire to finished the fight as soon as possible.

Hairstyle: Short ponytail with glasses.
Kancolle equivalent: Probably the exact opposite of Akagi.
Introduction: "USS Harder reporting for duty sir, we must always conserve our resources."

Paddle

A pessimist, regretful, and mentally-challenged girl with PTSD. She's like this ever since that "certain incident" which she have done and totally regret it (even though she didn't mean it). She still has trauma about it which is why she doubt every time she's making an action. As much as possible, she doesn't want to commit the same mistake again. Because of her conditions, she losses her confidence and made her extremely submissive. When she's having her PTSD, it'll a hard time calming her down so avoid anything that will make her recall those bitter memories. When nothing to do, she usually stays all by herself, isolating herself among the other ships. During battle, as much as possible she tries to stay focus despite of her conditions. If she'll ever sink, she'll be saying lines about the incident.

Hairstyle: Short hair that her bangs mostly covers her eyes.
Kancolle Equivalent: Haguro.
Introduction: "M-my name is Paddle... ... I'll serve the fleet as much as I could..."

Pampanito

A cheerful, happy-go-lucky, but somewhat lazy girl. She's part of the "Ben's Busters" together with Sealion and Growler. She loves calm and happy atmosphere, she really dislike this whole war in the first place. She's also an all-around good girl. Like Balao, she's also very compatible among the rest of the submarines. Sealion and Growler trust her the most, she's the only one who could tease Sealion without receiving a punch at the face. She's also a good friend of Barb and Mingo. She's pretty much a joker and wants everybody around her to be happy. When nothing to do, she'll probably sleeping outside the base or hanging out together with Sealion and Growler. During battle, she's the first to spot the enemy but she'll be coordinating with her teammates before launching an attack.

Hairstyle: Straight long twintails.
Kancolle Equivalent: A mix of Ise and Nenohi.
Introduction: "USS Pampanito here... call me if you want something."

Redfish

She's a refine, classy, and quite flamboyant, self-proclaimed actress girl. Her actions is always always refine and graceful which near to perfection, she refrains herself acting rowdy. Somehow she looks down at the other Kanmusus who doesn't know how to control themselves. But sometimes her actress attitude is pretty annoying, she's quite the drama queen.
