    Japanese Destroyer Fubuki

Fubuki was the lead-ship of the twenty-four Fubuki class destroyers, Fubuki-class destroyers were considered as one of the most advance destroyers which rivaled the USN destroyers Porters and Somers classes, their speed is 38 knots while armed with powerful twin 5 inch type 3 naval guns and 24 inch torpedo tubes. Fubuki was build in Maizuru Naval Arsenal, she was launched on November 15, 1927 and was commissioned on August 10, 1928.

During the attacks of Pearl Harbor, Fubuki was assigned in the DesDiv 11 of the DesRon 3 as part of the IJN 1st Fleet. She escorted the cruisers Kumano and Suzuya along with destroyer Sigiri and supported the invasion convoy of French Indochina to British Borneo.

She was also present in the invasion of Malaya where she assisted on rescuing survivors from transport ship Akita Maru which torpedoed by Dutch submarine O-19. She participated the Battle off Endau which she was credited for sinking British Destroyer Thanet. She also assisted on the invasion of Sumatra, she attacked fleeing allied shipping from Singapore, she managed to sunk and capture seven of them. She's also present in the Battle of Sunda Straight though Fubuki was accused for friendly fires which sunk four Japanese transport and a minesweeper but further investigation revealed that Mogami was responsible for it. Fubuki assisted further operations further south, she's also present in the Raids in Indian Ocean which she escorted ships out of Port Blair in Andaman Islands.

She's also present in the Battle of Midway where she provide anti-aircraft protection against the American aircraft. After Midway she makes antisubmarine patrols and escorted several ships from the mainland to any part within Southeast Asia and Southern Pacific.

She was deployed to Solomon Islands, she escorted the Tokyo Express, she was part of the with force that bombarded Henderson Field, and provide covers to several transport runs. She provide gunfire support on the Battle of Edson's Ridge. And again escorted five more troop transports.

Her last engagement was on the Battle of Cape Esperance, she and Hatsuyuki (which misidentified as Murakumo) were assigned to screen the cruisers Aoba, Kinugasa and Furataka which are tasked to bombard Henderson Field. The Japanese fleet misidentified the incoming American fleet because of the lack effective radar. American cruiser San Francisco CA-38 and Boise CL-47 were the first to spot Fubuki and fired several shells at the destroyer then the rest of the American fleet joined and smothered her with gunfire, Fubuki sunk afterwards. 109 of her crew were rescued by the American Destroyer USS McCalla DD-488 and destroyer minesweepers, USS Hovey DMS-11 and USS Trever DMS-16.

Fubuki sunk on October 11, 1942, she rests within the Ironbottom Sound.

    Watchout post
For peoples who know of those time, this is a reminder about the cornerstone of Japan's technological prowness; and to us the generation who are born after war wont this brings up a yearning to that achievement. In a boasting way, this is a ship that bring a turn to naval history; this is the new standard. It's like white rice for food. The ship girl who did her best! The first ship! Fubuki! Until Taishou period, technology for polishing rice has not been developed well, so Japanese consume whole-grain or half-polished rice. In the past, polishing is done manually, so only the wealthy can afford it.
Such dreamlike basic specifications is actually different from traditional ship designer's ideals. What made it happen is the requirements from the military command and the designers who thought of innovations to fulfil it.
In order to fulfil those requirements, these specifications are drafted.
    • To get the speed needed, 12.7cm twin turrets are specified together with three mountings of 61cm triple torpedo tubes (totalling 9 torpedoes).
    • The bridge is enclosed (previous destroyers' bridge are using canvas roof).
    • The ship bow is enlarged and built using Duralumin. But because the material are easily corroded by sea water, they are later replaced with thin steel plates.
    • To increase inhabitability in expeditions, the living quarter is equipped with quicklime stove, steam heater and refridgerator.
    • The first Japanese destroyer to be equipped with cruise turbine.
    • To strengthen the armour and cruising capability, the ship's hull is built from bow to stern.
I've been thinking... until her first modification, other than that slightly higher luck, all of her status are just standard. So why would Fubuki became the main character ? When I did my research about Fubuki, among the little surviving materials, many of them said: "Groundbreaking", "Surprised the world" or "Changed the destroyers". And born in early Showa period Japan, Fubuki is that first ship.
      Fire control
Even under limitation of Washington Naval Treaty, this is the first ship of Fubuki-class special-type destroyer that suprised the world by going beyond what a destroyer is. Even with the treaty that stopped the Eight Eight Fleet program, the situation that required navy to procure ships that can fight against enemy fleet doesn't change. The requirement given by the military command of the time are as follow:
      • Increased seaworthiness and cruising ability to handle the high seas.
      • Torpedo armaments that can be used offensively.
      • Ability to repel enemy destroyer fleet. Ability to fight against light cruiser class ship in a destroyer fleet of several destroyers. Moreover, having higher firepower than enemy destroyers that are being currently developed.
Special-types are the first Japanese destroyers to be equipped with triple-tube torpedo launchers
