For those of you wondering if this is a 'traditional' zounose doujin, unfortunately the answer is yes. If anything it's more depressing than the norm, to see what happens to poor Sanae, in addition to the usual nameless human victim. So do yourselves a favor and blacklist it now.

Well, I know that some people may not like it when some story involves death and bring up sensitive topics, but I'm just gonna say this:

They don't happen without a reason or meaning.

It's some kind of the Tengu society's ceremony where they asked for an "offering" from the villagers for every 9 years. Ever since they came, this is the first time the Moriyas attend this event. As the "honored guests" of the Tengu, the Moriya goddesses have to partake in eating this "offering", and that includes Sanae.

Kanako, Suwako and even Momiji weren't too happy about it, but they still oblige for the sake of maintaining their relations. But obviously, Sanae refused, even wanting to exterminate those "evil gods" with Reimu and Marisa, insisting that human sacrifice is taboo. Though she's quickly reprimanded by Reimu and Marisa, saying that such things are "normal".

Kanako didn't told her to eat it just because, either. She only wishes for Sanae to always be together with them. Because apparently, one of the way to truly be a god is to accept it as their faith for you, else you'll just be another cannibal.

Further in the story, Sanae herself realizes that she is also a kind of "offering" to the goddesses. She only keeps them from fading away. But she lived and interacted with them, much like a family. However, that is only back then in the outside world. Right now in Gensoukyo, they no longer need her to maintain themselves. She thought that she can no longer be of help to them, and thinks she's unneeded. But she was wrong.

Though a living goddess, the snake and frog accessories symbolizes her dependance to the two goddesses. The last part where they're broken, shows that she is now their equal and can now walk alongside them, fulfilling her desire to be able to support them again once more.

I did say that this is a heartful story of the Moriyas, didn't I?

And no, the boy has a name, it's Misuke. Don't devalue someone's sacrifice. He's Keine's student, and a wonderful one at that.

Maybe I got a bit too emotional there, so I apologize.

I find this enjoyable because it's the third of the Moriya series, starting from DODO, mainly about Sanae's growth. It also tucks with his previous book such as "When You See Upon the Star" with Marisa.

I want to reserve this for translation, but not anytime soon. Especially since the 2nd book haven't got translated yet and I'm such a lazyass myself.
But who am I to prohibit others from doing it?

I just recently started reading zuonose's work, but from what I've seen in the comments his works are quite controversial here (correct me on that, if needed). Personally I already like zuonose very much, while the trend is quite dark in his works, they are well written imho and manage to capture me emotionally. Also they're quite the interesting take on the world of Gensokyo and his art style is absolutely amazing (especially his coloured pictures). Ok, but I gotta say, the human flesh eating thing is sometimes a bit ... meh. For the lower youkai maybe. Some wild youkai ok. But the more civilized ones, I don't know, feels kinda strange.

Also thanks monhan for the story preview, I'm looking forward to it.

I've been really enjoying zounose works, mainly because it's a good change of pace compared to the usual fluff and comedy story. While the human eating is dark and disgusting, I like the theme of it, because it shows the youkai much more like they truly are. They are not humans, they are monsters, and monsters don't do pretty stuff. It's another atmosphere, and I like it. Either that or I just find it too light after the feels and horror of Water Mirror and Last Elixir of Asatsuki Dou... *shiver*

    Some very important things.

I honestly didn't catch all this until you spelled it out for me. Thank you. While I don't agree with the message, I feel like I can accept the story.

This begs the question, though: how will Zounose depict Sanae after this, though?

Hm, you know... Probably no different than she was before, just getting acclimated to life as a different life form.

Also, something interesting I noticed with Zounose: most doujinka portray Kanako as an egotistical megalomaniac and Suwako as a simple young goddess: In Zounose's works, like DODO, another doujin, he portrays Kanako as wise and righteous, and Suwako as dark and creaturelike.

That's another aspect of the Touhou-verse I couldn't really fathom before then; that maybe Suwako got what was coming to her. (Between that and this, this kind of puts the events of SA in a whole different light for me...)

I should have read the comments before reading this doujin. Very helpful in getting over the initial feelings.

What gets me, however, is Zounose's portrayal of the humans: Reimu and Marisa saying that this is "normal", the resigned villagers deciding on the offering, Sanae eventually getting over it, etc.

There's this absurd dissonance with the usual depictions of these characters that I find highly unsettling and hard to accept, more so than the cannibalism thing. Maybe it's because this aspect of Gensokyo isn't explored much by artists. Zounose usually pulls it off very well but I feel that he went overboard here.
Because of that, I did not care much about Sanae's "transformation" in the end, which was the whole point of the story. The human sacrifice scene kind of "stole the show", I guess.

Overall, it was a disgusting, revolting, but very interesting read. I still find it somehow less enjoyable than Zounose's previous works, though.

everything about this completely pisses me the fuck off...at first she's against it and then out of nowhere she all of sudden changes her mind????...wtf!?!?!?...it just seems so fucking stupid to me...it makes no fucking sense...its so unsatisfying in every way possible....it makes me sick with rage just by how unsatisfying this is...nothing about this feels right...everything that has happened in this doujin is wrong...and the only thing that zounose uses in order to justify it is to use some shitty excuse like "tradition" in order to justify something that is completely & painfully wrong...it completely takes the fucking piss!

You'd be surprised how many unforgivable things people do because of tradition. It's an everyday occurrence outside of First World countries.

Hell, even some First World countries have this kind of thing, too. It'd kinda like the Frat Party Dilemma - you either go with the flow or you break tradition and be shunned from that circle forever. Good luck finding your place in with world without your old community at your back.

She also didn't just suddenly changed her mind. She finally accepted her role in the whole affair as a Living Goddess. The reason being that it has to be her, and her alone. No one else can take her place. If she does not do it, no one else can. You don't see that from a community without long-standing traditions and customs with a highly differentiated way of life. You can't just take a Random Joe and thrust him into that role. You cultivate that persona and thought process from birth.

fun fact: do you know there's a certain trdition in china where they roast and eat their own babies?....if you didn't...well now you do...isn't that nice to think about.

if there's people with common sense who are not willing to take drastic measures in order to bring about change to individuals like those who you describe then one day the entire world will be swallowed by that tradition...I mean look at the thousands of religions all across the world that have held us back from technological evolution and have drove us to kill each other in the name of their imaginary sky lord all throughout the millennia...look at that as an example at what tradition does...change to all these traditions NEED to happen and if they refuse to change then we destroy the tradition altogether and snuff out the flame completely...using any excuse in general to justify something that is so obviously and completely wrong is completely wrong in of itself.

edit: also why not use an animal as a sacrifice...why not use an old dude as a sacrifice...why not use at least a middle-aged man...why for the love of fuck does such a kind child who hasn't even lived life yet have to be the victim?...this pisses me off the more I think about it.

What do you expect? It's OOC fanfiction from a cannibalism fetishist. If he wanted the writer could make everyone fart icecream and have dicks growing out of their foreheads. That's how fanfiction works.

Just put in the same bin as those hentai doujin where everyone's wildly fucking and call it a day. You don't need to get that angry over it.

Imagine thinking that "technological progress" is good in itself. Fun fact: Here in Russia once your disgusting kind took power, they outlawed all religions and the only thing that mattered was technological progress. They killed all the believers that refused to abandon their faith, and drove the rest underground. Everyone was forced to be an atheist scum. But then, when the abominable atheists lost their power, all those "atheists" came out and proclaimed their allegiance to their God. I know of one, that was held by all true atheists as "example" to follow, since he "abandoned" his faith for science, who killed all his true atheists comrades in the name of God, as revenge for all the believers suffering under their opression. All the moneuments and churches your kind destroyed are back up, and atheism itself is on its way to being outlawed, and most people distrust them, recognizing them as the scum that they are.

You can't take away value from something that didn't even have it from the beginning.

This is such a petty-ass comment, and I know it, but this remark just piss me off

Edit: Yeah, this was a very dumb comment, culture is obviously important lol.
