The long guns visible here are M1873 Springfield Trapdoor Rifles. This would be a bit inaccurate as the Carbine was what the 7th Cavalry used against Sitting Bull's men...

And another big problem was that the guns used were repeaters, while the 7th Cavalry's Carbines were one shot guns like the old Civil War rifles, but minus the muzzle-loading problems.
