Kancolle takes place in the future, where there is advanced technology that allows for the same firepower in far smaller packages than modern technology. They just dress it up as WW2 because historical shit is a fad in the future.
They're really railguns, and their "bones" are made of ultra-massive polymers. They use gravity projection machines powered by miniature nuclear reactors to power them to cancel out their mass under most circumstances, granting them that ability to "walk on water" like they were the density of balsa wood.
Oh, and their skin is also made of material that is as strong as several inches of steel, which is why taking a 16-inch shell to the face only leaves scuff marks and destroys the clothing. (They weren't given clothing that has that kind of damage resistance because the quartermasters were male, and like that sort of thing.)
Hahahaha! Ahh, man. So could their bodies muscle be made out of Carbon Nanotubes too? Actually that only helps reinforce your idea, which I honestly enjoy.

Custom have barrier like that absorb damage [over damage = broken and sink] even you can take stab, bomb, virtually anything without got any wound or burned hair. but, custom only can equip on beach or sea. not on the ground. 3. the drawback from damage is, they must get their nutrition back, since custom use liquid from people who use it [oh its alive you know, since it was materialized soul. they called Fairy]. from liquid medicine by "submerged" in Dock like Onsen. 4. the Custom can take "direct hit sink" [OHKO] IF they got over damage from backstab. [same to abysal] 5. they can have "instant" Overloaded medicene [called bucket] but over use that "thing" was not recommended since expensive and dangerous. 6. they was a normal girl, selected by military, and got Oversoul from pararel world ship soul. summoned by military. if the body was not "the choosen one" = painfull death awaits. [so military first make research anomaly to find new weapon, but gone wrong, because the gate not only summon kanmusu, but abysal too... they try to fight, but "normal" weapon is uneffective, by accident, a kanmusu deliberatly fight, and the result was overwhelming, but that kanmusu was KIA (her name was miyuki btw)] 7. since custom was invalid on land, they can store it in armory, OR in they soul. 8. For equipment, they can add another soul that can synchronize themself to their custom. But not all soul can synchronize [same to abysal]
that was my outcome from read hundred fans manga in short = kanmusu is = an intentional anomaly caused by science. Custom = equipment they use Fairy = Custom Soul synchronize = accessory like Gun, ammo, etc Bucket = Powerfull medicine Onsen = Liquid Recovery that custom need as fuel and ammo. oh almost Forgot = what happen if abysal or kanmusu sink ? why abysal and kanmusu different ?
i still got my doubt for a logic conclusion.
in short = they will sink, die. if lucky the kanmusu carrier [person] can be saved. but the custom back to it's world. it "can" back to kancolle world "if" the gate open triggered by death kanmusu or abysal. but, only the custom, kanmusu world must find the new carrier. so, if bismarck custom sink, and it's carrier KIA, they must summon it again, and find new carrier.
Custom only Accept "the Chosen one" to be it's carrier. Abysal Force Anybody near it to be it's Carrier.

Just clarifying... do you mean 艦装(Kansou) ? Usually it's just translated as (Ship) Equipment.

Same frustration faced by those who tried to pose AGP Yamato, and that's with the figure stand. Not to mention the whole thing fell apart if you look at it funny. Why can't Bandai make the attachments as sturdy as their Gundam lines -_-
