Because he's a guy with a hot girlfriend, and thus naturally wants to be prepared to do it?

I was under the impression they were married at that point, in which case ideally having sex with her would be without such things, and he wouldn't need them in his pocket unless he was going to go have sex elsewhere with someone else and didn't want to risk knocking up said other person.

Even people who are married often use birth control, since it's nice to be able to decide when you want to have a baby, and how many, rather than turning your sex-life into a game of Russian roulette.
