Is this really official? I predict fanworks where she and the Yamato sisters are at odds with each other if so...

I still say they need Rodney and King George V KanMusu so there's someone besides Abyssals around to bully Bis-ko.

    It's not official.

And honestly, my image of New Jersey would be a broad-shouldered woman (similar to Hyuuga) in a suit and tie with that three-point eye thing, a mole under the eye, and a mafioso bent.

So your image of New Jersey is a Mafia ship girl?

Well, yeah, what else do you think of when you think "New Jersey", besides a thick guy threatening to make you "sleep with the fishes", or corrupt public officials?

This is what I thought too. The corruption and mafia sort of came in second.

We dump our own garbage, thank you. (You're thinking of Long Island.)

I think her appearance fits perfectly, if you think of the USS New Jersey as the American Yamato (which it kind of it, the Iowa class being the best and most most advanced battleship ever constructed in World War 2 and the New Jersey herself being the most combat experienced fighting in four conflicts over 50 years) then her depiction is as close as you're going to get to pure Americana. Everything about her is perfect, from the stereotype of a sexy American woman, a tall leggy blonde with a large bust, to her fancy dress and sash straight from a Miss America pageant, to her graceful demeanor with fancy fan in one hand while cradling an alcoholic beverage in the other. Not every ship has to represent their name (as most of the Japanese Kantai ships have nothing to do with what their named after)

    Which piqued my curiosity…
So Miss America contest is held in New Jersey. Could that consideration be taken into this character design ?

She looks like she could be the wife of a Jersey mob boss who'd chop ya fuck'n balls off if ya looked at her tha' wrong way. I do agree that these designs make sense and appear to be well researched. Bravo.

The Japanese ships aren't named after political locations as frequently. I don't think any are directly named after cites and even the ones named after provinces tended to use older largely obsolete terms. When something is named after an existing political unit like a city or state though the tendency to associate it with the character of the people of that location becomes much stronger, and by the same token the people of that location tend to have a stronger affinity for it. That I can say with certainty seeing as I'm from New Jersey and seeing this creampuff kind of annoys me, and it does so because there is a certain bit of pride often taken my natives in being considered rough and not taking shit.

Whatever else you want to say about the state it has a reputation for 'tough guys' and grunge. You can debate the degree to which that's true, but it's certainly has a kernel of truth for the more populated north east and south western parts of the state. (You do NOT want to get lost in the wrong place in Camden or Newark and large areas along the interstates do in fact smell like either swamp and or chemical plants)

Also while the name might not always be a major factor on personality service history or known culture of the ship often is, and that doesn't really fit the idea of New Jersey as an elegant lady either. The ship was widely known, particularly during it's later career, for fairly relaxed behavior and discipline aboard (it sailed to Vietnam with gun tubs converted to swimming pools for instance). This image doesn't really reflect either aspect she looks entirely too elegant and way to much like a creampuff.

She would be fair better suited for a vessel named after an area that fancied itself elegant or distinguished like one of the southern states/cites. That's kind of my issue with most of this artists works in general they all seem to lean too far toward glamorous ladies in various sorts of dresses. I kind of want to see some rougher and less prissy girls for locations or ships with rougher reputations or culture.

There's Yamato, but it's known how is the effect on Japan when she sank. Probably why there's rarely any warship named after the whole nation.

IMO that description matches perfectly with Jeanex's design.

Yamato was named after the ancient Japanese province of Yamato.

But remember, to the extent that these designs have a look and personality based on the states (or for cruisers, cities) they're named after, it'll reflect how those places were perceived 75 years ago more than how they're perceived today. For example, the authors' notes for USS Nevada (post #1876850) mention how the first thing people tend to associate the state with now is Vegas and all the crazy stuff that happens there, but that decidedly was not the case during WW2.

Though I prefer her personality to be a rowdy battle-hunger soldier that just recently came out from the Vietnam War while having some slight childish habits (referring herself as "The Black Dragon") and cares for her allies (especially the destroyers).

I personally like this depiction of New Jersey, but yeah, I always had it in my head that New Jersey would be closer to Musashi than Yamato. That being said, it's a great depiction and I do like the artwork.

The New Jersey in Belated Battleships has an evening wear that looks exactly like this. An awesome reference I gotta say.
