Maybe the AK-12 was chosen simply to accentuate Verniy's OPness? I mean, there weren't too many improvements over the previous rifles, but not having to shift your grip to hit the selector and having less felt recoil shows that, finally, some Russian engineer didn't just slap some wood on stamped sheet metal and called it a rifle. Don't get me wrong; I think rifle is fine, comrade. But at some point, you've got to admit that just "fine" isn't good enough. Plus, rails look "modern".

Should be a Type 44 carbine with late, long bayonet housing and Type 2 submachine gun. (Searching/image searching on Google for 試製二型機関短銃 for the latter will turn up better results than in English.)

If they were going for historical accuracy, Hibiki would probably be carrying either a Type 38 Arisaka or maybe a vz24 Mauser or Type I Carcano (since the IJA controlled all the small arms factory, forcing the IJN to settle for older rifles and supplement them with foreign purchases), and Hibiki Kai would have a Beretta 38/43 (same reason, and I'm pretty sure those are the only SMGs the IJN ever laid their hands on; the Type 100s all went to the IJA and I'm sure the Navy never had any of the Type 2 prototypes...not to mention this would result in Hibiki Kai having a better weapon since those were chambered in 9mm Parabellum instead of the puny 8mm Nambu).
