"畜生" originally meant livestock in Chinese, yes, but was later co-opted　as the religious (Buddhist) term used for beasts. From there it became a very strong insult used for other people the speaker finds in contempt. The implication is that the other person is no better than a beast, and would soon reincarnate as one due to the bad karma he has accumulated.

In that sense, "fucker" or "son of a bitch" would be equivalent insults.

In Japanese, 「畜生」 can also be used as a generic curse, even if the speaker is not referring to anyone in particular. In that case the equivalent would be "goddammit!"

Winterblade just swapped the insults around, as Adm. Kamio is cursing in both Japanese and (katakana) English (he did say "goddamn").

IIRC "畜生" is a stronger insult in Chinese, as it is not often used. At least I've almost never heard anyone say it, aside from some period TV shows and some older literature. Most people seem to prefer the usual insults against the other party's mother instead.
