The plot seems interesting so far, sounds like a really huge incident. And looks like this time the enemies, or at least the rabbits and the possible lunarians in the second half, are actually trying to kill you (and all of Gensokyo). I guess the lunar capital bosses actually see the youkai as a real threat this time, or maybe they are just over reacting for the sake Yuyuko stole in SSiB/CiLR.
Still, i can't believe Yukari or some other "leader" isn't involved even a little bit in this and/or ULiL, as both the games seem to threaten Gensokyo as a whole this time.

Since MoF ZUN started plot connected "arcs" (games' generations), I can suggest that this is deeeeep shit with bottom somewhere at SSiB/CiLR.
Anyways, [KN] got the point about treating Gensokyo's existence.
After Kaguya's exile to Earth some time passed and she was forgiven. Eirin with emissary had to go to Earth and retrieve Princess. But instead Eirin f'ks emissars up and choose to stay on Earth just because of her loyality and Kaguya's refuse to go back to Moon. Eirin got to make barrier spell to conceal Earth from Moon.
Time passes, the Great Hakurei Barrier (GHB) raised, Gensokyo created. Reisen U.I. fled to Earth and found fellow refugees.
At time of "Imprishable Night" events Eirin made barrier spell v2.0 which is wasn't left unnoticed by powerful beings of Gensokyo. After "some negotiations" Eirin convinced to dispell any barriers to reveal true Moon and because GHB enough to conceal Gensokyo from lunarians. But now Earth and Moon in direct sight.
After opening direct passage lunarians started to seek for refugees, but failed. Since IN they observing Earth. Time passes, moon spies (if any) could make their way to Gensokyo, but GHB still blocking any links to Moon. Only thing for Moon bosses left is to wait.
Some shit hits the fan during 2nd Moon invason, but lunarians wasn't able to reach Gensokyo.
Seija caused uproar that ended by half of Gensokyo tailing her. Power of Miracle Mallet seriously disturbed (at least) GHB - it was THAT powerful, which alerted lunarians - "somthin'-somthin' going on Earth" and pinpointed where to seek those damn yokais. Sumireko's unintended "Urban Legend" incident (read her profile) not helping either - toying with occult magic to go to another world ultimatively distorted GHB and lunarians started to get involved. If any spies wasn't infiltrated before - now is perfect time.
Also Reisen could be "beacon" for Moon due to moon rabbit's telepathy and "signals" started to leak 'cause of said GHB's distiortions and absence of Eirin's spell. In other hand Reisen also can detect moon rabbit spies by said telepathy.
Yes, I know plot can be way simpler (like in PoFV - fan spinning because someone was lazy) or just chain of unfortunate events (MoF > SA > UFO > TD) because someone took "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" aphorism too literal, and that chained into "Hell is full of good meanings, but heaven is full of good works". This wall-o-text can be crazy overthinking but we like complicated plots, aren't we?

I don't know man, I played Imperishable Night the other day, after around 7 months of not playing Touhou, managed to get to Erin without using a continue. Just a couple of days later I played the trial for Lunatic Kingdom, and I never beat it cause Doremy's last card proved too much for me!

Imperishable night is one of the easier ones in my opinion. Easy auto gather, simple patterns and since you had multiple characters to choose from it wasn't as hard as say...oh, I don't know, PERFECT CHERRY BLOSSOM

I play regularly on normal mode, i'm not a pro but i'm not rusty :V LoLK is just much more difficult than any other game. "Easy" mode here is equal or even harder than "normal" mode of the other games.

This is likely intentional, both to balance the basically infinite lives you have, and because this time the enemies are actually going all-out and not following the SC rules, since they are actually trying to kill you. Reimu and Marisa noticed how the random enemies' attacks are much more violent than usual too.
Going by the plot of LoLK, it seems like ULiL was just a buffer, to a much more intense plot for touhou 15! Seeing that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Touhou Project, some MAJOR shit is going down this time. The enemies are much harder, the tone of the game feels dark & eerie, talks about mass extermination(purification) of Gensyoko, Udonge is a playable character(which would never happen in a normal game), talks of leaders of the moon going insane, and all this is going down on the Moon. ZUN is not playing around this time, and it looks like things are going to get even more epic from here on out. Welcome to the 20th anniversary of Touhou folks, playtime is over!
