Usually that depends on your height. For a child they get better grip grabbing it from the top, but for someone tall or those who tend to play "with style" (just like crossing hands on P1 side) it's a common grip to do it from below.
I avoided the bottom grip because it's a sure electric shock where I played.

Who said something about plastic? The joystick was as metal bar only half covered by plastic, not in the form of a big ball but like a thin candle flame. You had two choices: get shocked by static electricity (or electrocuted for bad isolated cable) or get a big blister in the palm of your hand if not careful.
