Depends. If you go to those places that serve extremely fresh fish, it can be.

Doesn't have to be that fresh - the fish at fishmarkets (including Tsukiji) usually comes flash-frozen. If you've got the best cuts of good fish (like Bluefin, or even just regular toro) then yeah, it can get ridiculously expensive. Like, 6 figures at the best restaurants.

'Proper' sushi places in Japan (i.e. not conveyor belt, and decent quality) usually end up in the 2-5,000 range for a decent meal. So for two people, at a decent place, eating the more expensive sushi (good tuna, eel, that sort of thing - not egg.) then is could be 10,000+ yen easy. More if they got drinks.

Dang, that's expensive, though I still want to try sushi from Japan one day (and other delicacy from there as well).

There are plenty of cheap sushi shops. Just watch out so you don't eat too much and rack up a huge bill as well as watch out for certain shops since you might get food poisoning if you just randomly go to random dirty sushi shops. Reports of people getting sick from eating at shops that are not up to sanitary standards are too numerous to count.

Always best to research and look around, maybe find some reviews or talk to people before popping into those places is what I say when it comes to stuff like sushi.

Thanks for the advise, I'll make sure to take a look before going (if even I'm going but I'll definitely want to go!).

A real sushi-ya isn't cheap. I really don't recommend going for Sushi for all-you-can-eat. It's meant to be made fresh by a chef. You can go for those conveyor belt sushi for a convenient eating experience as you see what's there and you pick it up.

I've been to decent conveyor belt places, and you can just ask for freshly made there anyway. The very best places, you don't even order, the chef does that for you.

Last place I went to (in Ueno) was 100-300 a plate, and it was pretty good.
