Ignoring that the compass is just game mechanics designed to make things a pain for the players, that story was legitimately creepy.

There was another story like this in another doujin here where they said the compass shows the only safe route, with all others being 100% infested with abyssals. I'd like to think this is similar

Yup, Boushi-ya's The beginning (pool #8986). And I kinda like that game mechanics explanation(Boushi-ya's story is very detailed about explaining everything about the game, from compass to construction). It's a nice point of view compared to the "compass fairies are bitches" (although they have some kind of charm too, like man arihred's depictions).

Meh, still hate compass fairies.
