Actually, considering this artist and his doujins, the thwomps are probably his way of "sneaking" in a reference.

I actually thought the hair accessories would be the blue ? cannon from Super Mario 64 that you can use around the levels to blast yourself to various different parts of that said level. Or the one you can use in the castle grounds. Thwomps work anyway.
