Well, that was a rather meaty installment, dialog- (and plot-hint-)wise.

I had a feeling Kaguya's motivation would boil down to petty spite. She simply cannot accept that Mokou can find meaning to her existence outside of being her personal punching bag, so she seeks to tear it all down.

I've noticed that it constantly flip-flops between fan works which of the two is tired of the war and ready for a truce, and which one is actively perpetuating the feud out of endless spite. Generally, the former is the one with more screen time and intended to be sympathized with. In this case, that's Mokou.

Kind of disappointed this is what her motivations end up being revealed to be.

I dunno, I think I expected a little more than this "generic" reason from Jouji. We've got many well-written characters and interactions in this series, with their personalities quite fleshed out and such, and then we have "generic bitchy yandere Kaguya" in the middle of it all because a bad guy was needed.

    This is true.
The reason why it's more often Mokou depicted as the one perpetuating the feud is because I believe she is the one canonically stated to have something against Kaguya. Kaguya doesn't have much reason to be angry at Mokou and keep perpetuating the feud, except maybe her personal entertainment.
Mokou is the one who has a personal reason to be vengeful - it's the whole reason she's even immortal in the first place. That's why I think Mokou's usually the one depicted as fueling the fire, though seeing Mokous "moving on" like in this series is a welcome change of pace as well.

Actually, if you want to speak of canonical work, you should see Mokou's dialogue in Imperishable Night. Mokou explicitly states that it was Kaguya who's dragged on the fighting to the millennia. In another team's dialogue, she expresses her annoyance for Kaguya's constant attempts at trying to kill her, and that she should know how pointless it is, even expressing Kaguya should know it's meaningless seeing as how she's the one who made the Hourai Elixir in the first place. Indeed, I'd say that canonically, the cat-and-mouse chase is reversed of the fandom depicts it as and that it's Kaguya who always hunts Mokou down in this game because of her obsession with strong danmaku shooters. At least from her demeanor in that game, I'd say Mokou hates Kaguya for this reason out of annoyance than any real malice in modern times.
