Funny how I-13 gives the impression of being a sultry seductress, yet her voice lines paint her as being more similar to Jintsuu or other shy, soft-spoken characters.

Twins? It will get harder to tell them apart considering not many draw the equipment (so pay attention to the uniform number). Unlike previous submarine names, this one is seems to be 「一」Hito「三」mi, don't know about the other... 「一」i/ichi/hi「四」to/yo? Hitoyo perhaps? Is that even possible?

She calls herself "Hitomi" in her lines, while I-14 calls herself "Iyo".

Actually I find there are a lot of shipgirls whose visual character and voice-wise charater don't match very well. But maybe that's just me.

what are you talking about? One uses a glove on the right hand and the other on the left, completely different designs!

    Other differences:

    - The twins have this long bunch of hair on one side: I-13 on the left side of her head, and I-14 on the right.
    - I-13's hair curves inward to her head, while I-14's flares out.
    - I-13 has split hair bangs, while I-14 has a single whole one.

This one will help to differentiate which one is it, a bit like Ami/Mami from Idolm@ster (their first chara design I mean).

Okinami comes first to mind, but then again, I'm weird in that I actually have Yuugumos in my mind. There's also Shouhou (coat off tough girl image, shy and defeatist actual personality), most of Shibafu's "potato ships" look the same, but have very different personalities (from visual appearance on her card, alone, can you tell the personality of Hatsuyuki? How about Akagi or Ooi?), the early (pre-kai) art of Sazanami, Akatsuki, and Arashio don't show their personalities well at all, Samidare is just "pretty hair girl" in spite of being the hyperactive dojikko in personality, Kashima -unless you don't think Kashima Is A Good Girl- is typecast as a seductress because of her smile and pose in spite of not really having any evidence in her lines, Kako the narcoleptic has art for a chuunibyou character, Nachi the stoic has artwork that makes her look unsure of herself, Akitsu Maru looks like a creepy goth girl...

And finally there's Musashi, who's visual character is just a total self-contradictory mess, so you can't figure out what parts of her visual character to ignore. ("Let's give her bodybuilder abs with sarashi tough girl image, and then give her quad tails like she's some 12-year-old pop idol!")

Well, there's Kashima, whose face makes her look like a sadist when she is in fact a good girl (kinda like I-13 actually), and Kako's Kai Ni art where she looks energetic when in fact she's a sleepyhead.

From the thumbnail, I thought she was wearing a cowboy hat and was wondering why a Japanese sub would do that.

I'm wondering if these two's flatter chests but similar hips and legs to I-26 will offset the trend of people drawing swaths of inflated bust shots and encourage more hips and legs...but probably not.

Most of those is just nitpicking. Especially the bit about Musashi
To be honest the only one that even remotely bothered me was Houshou. There may have been others but she stands out among the rest

Is it "just nitpicking", or just "something you've gotten used to"?

If it's "just nitpicking", can you explain to me a good reason for how a hairstyle fairly widely mocked actually complements the personality she was given? Good visual design communicates personality before a character speaks a word, so garbled messages are poor visual design. Characters like Hayashimo or any of the Kongous convey their personalities easily through their design, but Musashi's is just gibberish.

While I'm at it, Akitsushima's design also bears special mention for being the most garishly over-designed character. Side ponytail but also having an (ergonomically insane) body-length ribbon with anchors AND a mini-hat plus, why not, throw an ahoge cherry on top! She wears a vesty-like thing that has semi-detached sleeves that ultimately make it a jacket that simply has no armpits for no good reason, with green and black and white with extra black stripes and then some green polka-dots and then some frilly black-and-white bands over random, asymmetrical parts of her. She then holds a giant, detailed aircraft on one side, and a giant, detailed set of machinery off her other hip to the point she's half-buried out of view in her own image. One note is clear and distinct, but a thousand clashing notes makes nothing but static.

Hmmm Tv Tropes failed me because I never realized these things were such an issue looking through their site.

I've always imagined that Kako's K2 art depicts her in one of those moments when she's fired up and ready to fight. I think it goes along nicely with her rather energetic equipment and battle lines.

I always figured Kako's pic was in combat, where she is fired up. Sleepy is not really appropriate. (Then again Pola) Although it'd've been nice if they'd made her look sleepy in her damaged sprite.

I always thought Kashima's eyes were to compliment her "ufufu"-ness, which she does do a lot of.

It's kinda annoying that the artist prefer Nimu's breast over her sexy hips.
