There are some indications that Samurai, Donut and the rest escaped from some type of situation (post #2627636). You can see a younger Donut has some kind of shackles around his waist, and perhaps removing those shackles caused those scars around the waist...?
There are also signs that Beauty rescued them somehow, as most of them consider him their hero in a relationship chart (post #2899966).
