You know, I didn't spring on this before because it was in the middle of a silly section of worldbuilding, and there's little point in making fun of the clowns, but why is being female the "default" of an eggless? If they're all cursed to be male, and the egg's magic changes them to being female, wouldn't having the egg (and the magic effect it produces) have the effect of leaving them all male, as per the overarching curse it's supposed to be subverting?
(Presuming, of course, the intro narration is reliable to start with, of which I have doubts...)

Probably a failsafe put in to make sure that there are females around to propagate the race.
I'm starting to wonder if the Elves took advantage of the Devil's curse to essentially turning the humans (and other species) into a breeding stock? It just seems like the way that they orchestrated things leans toward that conclusion.

Except not - being a female because of loss of egg leaves them completely infertile. (Which is why they said in the third chapter that eggless were a kind of underclass because they were "useless as women".)
If anything, it would be a punishment for abuse of the egg system (and repeatedly trying to become female, instead of trying to form harems through violence like good barbarians) to be stuck as a woman that is "useless" because she can't have children... (Which is rather saying something about gender roles in and of itself.)
