    八一式马步枪, Type 81 Rifle, I have no idea how to translate the "马" or what it means for the designation. But from what I can find, it seems to be a rifle developed during China's war against Japan, and was originally named "无名式马步枪", or "Nameless Rifle".

    马
    is a simplified form for Horse... why I don't know if its related
    maybe because of the action as most pictures related to 马步枪 points to bolt action rifles or literal translation to Horse step guns

    Yes,in Chinese"马枪/骑枪"always means carbine
