Apparently, around 1900 the British were Lords of the undersea cables, and spent a stupendous amount of time and energy connecting places around the globe they were using at the time, and then repairing them, and maintaining cable service stations to take telegrams etc..

The passions of yesteryear are odd to us, as ours will be to the future people.
