Not all African people have the same skin colour. And their skin colour can naturally lighten over time (due to sun exposure?). My mam, for instance, is Malagasy but has lighter skin than Sheva up there.

While I agree with this statement, I have to say this. If you've played the game for more then just the first chapter, and I mean more then 1-1, you'd know for a fact that she's black.
I'm black and all honesty the first time I saw her I thought she was Brazilian mainly because her skin color is so much lighter than the black zombies in the game and her face has caucasian features

QFT. Seriously guys, stop being so scared of sounding racist. She doesn't look black other than skin tone and, as animeboy12 said, even that's ambiguous because it could mean she's Brazilian or something (like that Eddie Goro woman from Tekken, who she incidentally looks quite a lot like).

Yeah my mother's skin color of her and were bahamian (carribean islanders).
I love the 360 demo, though I played with of the weirdest people online, some young kid was beating the executioner so easily and told me to fight the zomibes, I felt left out...
Skin color aside(my brother and father are extremely skinned aswell), her face and hair just don't look very African. It's weird, most of the time whenever a Japanese company wants to do a black character they overexergerate the feature for males and underexergerate the feature for females
that's why I just said "skin color aside." The least they could do is give her some genuine African features, especially since story say she's a native of the area

Sheva is African, there several places in Africa that contain alot of lighter skinned African and parts that have darker skinned Africa...just because she doesn't look like our 'ideal' vision of Africa doesn't make her not African. If Capcom did make her 'ideal' people would still complain only this time it would be 'Why is she a stereotype!?!?!'.

When was the last time you seen a sambo character in a video game outside of Balrog (M. Bison)? I'm black and I don't see anything 'un black' about Sheva.
In RE4 NO one complained about Spanish infected people or made pointless debates about racism in that game even though they had a white as white bread bad ass mofo Leon S Kennedy killing the lots.
Now all of the sudden you get another badass mofo Chris Reidfield in Africa with a African partner and that's racists.
Where the bloody hell was the complaining with Far Cry 2? Or 50 cent's newest game? Or bloody Gears with Cole Train, that game was rife with stereotypes.
The simple truth is all cherry picking and 'acceptable' stereotypes that have been rampant in gaming and media in general for years.
Now that's not saying RE5 is without faults but really this debate over the appropriate amount of blackness on Sheva is in itself racist. If gaming in general is going to get on racism then we need to start getting every stereotype there is, not just blacks.
All I know is that RE5 is a great (not perfect) game, Chris and Wesker are smoking hot and I would totally tap Sheva and Excella's asses in a plane over Spain in the rain.

Just nitpicking here - native European-descent Spaniards are generally white. There might be some Moorish ancestry sparsely sprinkled in their family trees from way back when (no pedigree is 100% pure, after all), but it's primarily straight-up white.

nobody complained about farcry 2 because you were allowed to pick the race of you're character.
and most gamer I talk I've talk to don't think the game is racist the just think it has some troubling imagery in the trailer. Black thoughout history have been portrayed as inhuman savages and that what people see in resident evil.

I think she looks fine too and yea there should be people of difference skin colors in more games. But as far as race goes, their more to race than just skin color. You can't just a Caucasian women change the skin tone and call her African.
I dunno, I know that sheva is based of a black model (Michelle Van Der Water), though she is on the lighter side(not that I discriminate on skin tone) and again she looks nothing like to other infected people .

LOL! True, true..You hear no complaints from me, even if it's nitpicking, Leon was in a 'magical' Spainishland killing 'Spanish' people. Whether they're white, sorta white, sienna brown, he was killing them and NO ONE complained. For all the ignorant commentors...all africans dont have stereotypical features, such as broad nose and lips. There are many africans with petite features and have a light skin tone, like Sheva. As you may not have noticed, people of color come in many shades.
There's a big difference between African-Americans and Africans.
