Wasn't just germans either (poles, hungarians, ukranians, romanians, lithuanians, latvians, estonians, and even russians.) were subjected to this treatment. If I've got my facts straight it was mostly rear echelon troops that did this though I'm not always the most up to date.

yes the soviet troops does commited an awful lot of atrocities during the war on german civilian, however if you think about it, they (soviet soldiers) were probably saw it as a pay back on what the germans had done to the soviet civilian, and yes alot of soviet civilan were massacered and raped by the german army as well

I have done zero research, so don't quote me, but I think what Chal was getting at was the specific gun used to hold victims at gun point while horrific acts of rape and what not were preformed. To my understanding, that was the original purpose of his/her comment; To reflect on the specific gun used (Mosin Nagant). Just to get everybody back on track.

Edit: after doing some research, that specific gun was used to do such things, as it was a common gun for the soviets.

Doesn't change the fact that the people they raped and tortured in turn were innocent of the wrongdoings done towards them.

Plus, let's face it, they'd have done it even if the germans had behaved properly. The soviets happily bombed Helsinki nearly right after the start of the Winter War, mostly because they thought they could get away with it (probably same rationale for the war itself as well=. They attacked Romanian forces that were in the process of withdrawing from Bessarabia after Romania had been given the ultimatum, resulting in tens of thousands of casualties for Romania. They also weren't shy of plundering whatever there was of value in Manchuria when they came in in 1945, which is a shitbag move considering that the chinese were the ones who had to deal with japanese occupation and aggression for nearly 15 years, if you consider the seizing of Manchuria as the earliest point (and as such, it'd have only been fair for japanese assets to have been retributed to them).

That's not to mention the absolute shit treatment given to the poles between the split of Poland, and up until Barbarossa (and the reversal of such treatment had more to do with self-serving purposes than a genuine change of heart).

While it's certainly true that the soviets (people) endured absolutely horrific treatment, they themselves were not foreigners to the notion of being asshats to other people which had done little to nothing towards them. As such, I hardly see their treatment of the german people as being entirely ''payback''. It's more like their usual business but with a bit of revenge mixed onto it.
