It's because she's Buddhist. Buddhism forbids meat because it involves taking a life.

Well, you can eat meat, but it's gotta fall under three things: It can't have been made with you in mind, it'd go to waste otherwise, and I forget the third one.

Basically, taking a life ain't on, but letting one go to waste is worse.

Generally the meat has(/preferably) to have died naturally rather than by human hands I believe? This could be everything from death by age, death by accident and so forth?

It can be gifted without you in mind, but it's only if no one else will take it, really.
