    There's no mystery involved. If the golden rule in the army is "Never volunteer for anything" the the rule in the workplace is "Never work harder or faster then the people around you". Actually both those rules probably apply to both places really...

    Because the instant lazier people around you or the supervisor directly above realize you work harder or faster then average they'll immediately take advantage. Work only as hard as it takes not to get yelled at and no more.

    The reward for being excellent - get more work until you fail to complete it and get disciplined for your 'inability to meet targets'.

    As a owner of a news website, I often reward my editors that works fast and well with bonuses and most of the time with letting them go home early. It might be an old way to run a business.

    It is the best way to get both quality and quantity at good rate. Atl in the long run... for most companies. That or threatening them or their family, but that is more Eastern European method than something that might work in the US I suspect
