Logically thinking, why would I make that comment if I haven't seen it? If I did indeed only watch the last episode, I should expect to be confused, so I wouldn't ask that question in the first place. Also, "in the end" implies that the I did watch the series.

It is extremely obvious that it is from Neon Genesis Evangelion. But if you still have doubts, just look at the Eva units in the background.

Throughout the series Asuka suffered from an inferiority complex which often caused her to give up. When her Eva was destroyed in the end she once again gave up, but still had the will to survive because she didn't become part of the human instrumentality. Shinji choked Asuka as a means to snap her out of her funk; to force her to choose between giving up as usual and dying at his hands or choose to live.
